I live in North Carolina, former tobacco capital of - uh, well - North Carolina (Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia also were tobacco capitals). Anyway, with the various problems with tobacco products in recent years, many tobacco farmers have converted to other crops, not the least of which being grapes for wine-making. So, quite a few wineries have cropped up over the last few years all across NC. Some of these wineries showcase local artists in their store/tasting areas.
I got a call Saturday afternoon from the marketing director of one of these wineries saying that the artist they had scheduled for May-June had backed out and he wanted me to fill in. How cool is that? This will be my first show - not counting internet galleries - since high school (a VERY long time ago -- read David Lee Roth was still in Van Halen and home computers still had to be hooked up to regular TVs).
And, this will be a great two months, as well. In addition to an advertised reception on the first, there's an art festival at the winery the first weekend of May, a special Mother's Day event, a Father's Day event, and a couple other special events all of which will draw more and more people to the winery.
The owner of the winery and the marketing guy both say I'm practically guaranteed to make several sales. And, they say the best-selling stuff is in the range of my highest prices. So, there's potential to do really well here! Yippee!
It isn't exactly a formal, stuffy gallery, but it puts my work out there where more or less regular people can see it. And, if I'm painting to an audience at all, it's regular people, not stuffed-shirt art academics who are more concerned with where I got my art degree (which I don't have) and who I studied under (which actually includes some of the fine artists right here on dA). So, yippee again!
Now, I just have to take out a loan to get some stuff framed!

I take freelance/commission work. Send me a note with questions or requests. I no longer do free requests. Art takes time, effort and materials. Anyone who can't understand or appreciate that (not to mention the need for "talent" and/or "skill") should look elsewhere to fill their needs.
